DESNZ publishes CfD AR5 results

Electricity Pylon

On Friday 8 September, DESNZ published the results of Allocation Round 5 (AR5) of the Contracts for Difference (CfD) scheme, which commenced on 30 March 2023. This lists the successful applicants for AR5 and includes information such as the size of the project, strike price, and delivery year. Total capacity and the final strike price for each technology are as follows: solar PV (>5MW) total capacity 1,927.68MW and £47.00/MWh strike price; onshore wind (>5MW) total capacity 1,480.74MW and £52.29/MWh strike price; Remote Island Wind total capacity 223.60MW and £52.29/MWh strike price; tidal stream 53.04MW total capacity and £198.00/MWh strike price; and geothermal total capacity 12MW and £119.00/MWh strike price. In a release issued by the government the same day, it stated that AR5 is set to deliver 3.7GW of clean homegrown energy, with a record 95 new projects secured – up from 93 in the previous round. It added that this includes significant numbers of solar power and onshore wind and a record number of tidal schemes, as well as geothermal projects for the first time. Noting the significant absence of offshore and floating offshore wind technologies from this year’s allocation, the government attributes this as a result of the global rise in inflation and the impact on supply chains.
