Decarbonisation hindered by lack of overarching delivery plan, says PAC

UK Parliament buildings.

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) announced on Wednesday 21 June that it has published a report on Decarbonising the power sector. This highlights that while the government has many separate ongoing power decarbonisation plans, its ambitions for power sector decarbonisation by 2035 are jeopardised by the lack of an overarching delivery plan. It adds that a delivery plan, which it states should be in place by autumn 2023, would provide investor confidence, which is more critical now given the scale of spending expected in the EU and the US on power sector decarbonisation. Furthermore, the report notes the lack of clarity around the government’s plans to improve energy efficiency and change consumer behaviour and questions the credibility of the government’s plans for expanding nuclear, solar and wind power.
