Regen calls for reform and investment to prepare the network for net zero

Electricity Pylon

Regen published a report on Wednesday 24 May titled Building a GB electricity network ready for net zero, highlighting the urgent need for reform and investment given that lead times for critical low-carbon projects to connect to the grid are now over 15 years. It added that while a net zero grid is achievable, the priority now is moving from action plans to delivering reform and investment at pace. The report sets out the scale of the challenge, the initiatives underway, and the key priorities to ensure network infrastructure is not a barrier to net zero. This includes that networks must invest ahead of increasing demand; that Ofgem must provide strategic leadership to enable net zero; reforming the connections process; speeding up the planning and consenting process; and establishing a clear timeline and remit for the Future System Operator.
