On Wednesday 26 April, the Aldersgate Group published a new report with University College London (UCL) titled A zero-carbon power grid and the electrification of heavy industry: how to deliver on a twin challenge. The report outlines policy measures needed to decarbonise the power system and support the electrification of heavy industrial sectors. This includes accelerating reforms to the grid connection process; streamlining the planning process for low-carbon and network infrastructure by installing a presumption in favour of net zero aligned projects; extending the Contracts for Difference scheme; continuing to explore the Review of Electricity Market Arrangements (REMA) option of transitioning to a dual-market approach, creating a Green Power Pool alongside the wholesale market; and reviewing the UK Emissions Trading System.
