RWE awarded contract through National Grid Pathfinder 3 competition

RWE announced on Wednesday 14 December that it has been awarded a contract through National Grid’s Pathfinder 3 competition, under which it will construct a specialist unit, called a Synchronous Condenser. This does not generate power but instead adds inertia to the network, which is important to support grid stability and a decarbonised grid. The unit will be located at RWE’s existing Pembroke power station site in South Wales, forming part of the decarbonisation hub “Pembroke Net Zero Centre”. Construction is expected to start in 2023, with the unit expected to be operational in the second half of 2025.
